Competition Piece follows three wildly different groups of high school students as they prepare to face off at a one-act drama competition. The polished prep school kids throw themselves into a romance, while the public school burnouts tackle the sort of serious teen problem play they think judges will love, and the local art school’s troupe sets its sights on an ambitious one-act version of King Lear performed as Japanese Noh drama. Each group is certain they understand what makes great theatre. Each is equally certain the others do not.
As rehearsals give way to competition, artistic ambition collides with teenage rivalry, clashing personalities, and the desperate desire to impress a panel of judges. Written by John S. Wells, Competition Piece is a fast-moving comedy about the wonderfully serious business of making theatre, and the young artists who will risk friendship, dignity, and good taste for their moment in the spotlight.
