“We're making a pie.”
Back Story follows siblings Ainsley and Ethan Belcher through two decades of loyalty, rivalry, reinvention, and love. Their story begins during the worst blizzard of the century, when two-year-old Ainsley nearly sacrifices a toe trying to clear a path for her baby brother’s arrival. It is the first of many grand gestures, small betrayals, shared secrets, and private battles that will define their lives together.
As Ainsley and Ethan grow from childhood into adulthood, they push against one another, protect one another, and grapple with the lingering absence of the father who left them for the wilds of Alaska. By turns funny, tender, and painfully familiar, Back Story traces the complicated intimacy of growing up alongside the one person who remembers where you came from. Inspired by an original narrative by Joan Ackermann, Back Story is a poignant portrait of siblinghood and the shared history that can divide us, shape us, and bind us together.
